Who is speaking to the Churches in Revelation 2 and 3? Every oracle starts with a description of Jesus... but, every oracle ends with "Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches."

While the Scriptures never explicitly say, Jesus is fully God and fully man... The Scriptures do implicitly let us know Jesus and the Spirit are part of the One Tri-Unity of God. One God in three Persons.

Trusting in God’s Word – over 7000 promises!

Missionaries Dick and Margaret Hillis were caught in China during the Japanese invasion. The couple lived with their two children in the inland town of Shenkiu. The village was tense with fear, and every day brought terrifying reports of the Japanese advance. At the worst possible time, Dick developed appendicitis, and he knew his life depended on making the long journey by rickshaw to the hospital. On January 15, 1941, with deep foreboding, Margaret watched him leave.

Soon the Chinese colonel came with news. The enemy was near and townspeople must evacuate. Margaret shivered, knowing that one-year-old Johnny and two-month-old Margaret Anne would never survive as refugees. So she stayed put. Early the next morning she tore the page from the wall calendar and read the new day’s Scripture. It was Psalm 56:3—“What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.”

The town emptied during the day, and the next morning Margaret arose, feeling abandoned. The new verse on the calendar was Psalm 9:10—“Thou, Lord, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.”

The next morning she arose to distant sounds of gunfire and worried about food for her children. The calendar verse was Genesis 50:21—“I will nourish you and your little ones.” An old woman suddenly came to their house with a pail of steaming goat’s milk, and another straggler arrived with a basket of eggs.

Throughout the day, sounds of warfare grew louder, and during the night Margaret prayed for deliverance. The next morning she tore the page from the calendar to read Psalm 56:9—“When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back.” The battle was looming closer, and Margaret didn’t go to bed that night. Invasion seemed imminent. But the next morning, all was quiet. Suddenly, villagers began returning to their homes, and the colonel knocked on her door. For some reason, he told her, the Japanese had withdrawn their troops. No one could understand it, but the danger had passed. They were safe.

Luke 23:44 It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour, 45 for the sun stopped shining. This crusty old soldier never heard Jesus teach, never saw any of his miracles…. But he did see how Jesus died. It wasn’t a sermon that captured this guy’s heart… it was observing the courage and faith Jesus suffered with.

And all at once this Roman Soldier who knew not a lick of Scripture…. Praised God!

For some, who are touched, the cross inspires deep devotion and what looks like frivolous and wasteful giving.

For some, who are touched, the cross is an intense reminder that even as you stood against Him, you received His healing touch.

For some, who are touched, the cross is a humbling call to praise God, for surely this was a righteous man!

Malchus, the servant of the High Priest

John 18:1 - When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was an olive grove, and he and his disciples went into it. 2 Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples. 3 So Judas came to the grove, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons. 4 Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, "Who is it you want?" 5 "Jesus of Nazareth," they replied. "I am he," Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) 6 When Jesus said, "I am he," they drew back and fell to the ground. 7 Again he asked them, "Who is it you want?" And they said, "Jesus of Nazareth." 8 "I told you that I am he," Jesus answered. "If you are looking for me, then let these men go." 9 This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: "I have not lost one of those you gave me." 10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant's name was Malchus.) 11 Jesus commanded Peter, "Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?"

Had it not been for the blood stained rob… he no doubt would have thought he awoke the next day from some horrible nightmare!

Tradition says he was numbered among the believers…. I’m certain that whenever the conversation turned to the Carpenter that supposedly rose from the dead, he thought of that moment.

Some are touched by choice… some are touched by chance…

Luke 22:39-46

39 Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. 40 On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.” 41 He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, 42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.
45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. 46 “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”

Jesus is in control his whole ministry, but suddenly He’s falling apart! Many have faced their deaths with much more dignity and honor than this!

No culture back then would read this scene and consider Jesus honorable, worthy to be followed and given your loyalty!

Was something more going on…?

a. He must have been facing something that was so much worse than physical death. Physical death by comparison was a mild cold.

b. He was just now getting a taste of what was about to happen… that which was way beyond
the physical torture he would endure. He always knew… but knowing about (information) and beginning to really taste it are different.

c. Let this cup pass from Me. The cup is a metaphor for the wrath of God on human evil. It’s divine judgment. (Have your cake and eat it too).

So what was happening here? Jesus, who lived fully for the Father… perfect in every way… loving completely the Father… comes now to the Father, and instead of the embracing love He deserves, He instead feels the full force of God’s anger and wrath at sin.

His whole life Jesus would go to the Father and heaven would open up… but now He comes to the Father and Hell opens up. The Cup. Think about that…. Let it rest on you…

We don’t like this idea of a God of wrath… we don’t like an angry God! But understand this….

*IMPORTANT* If you don’t believe in a God of wrath… then you have no idea of how valuable you are to Him! If all you want is a loving God… you have God with no need of a cross… and no need for a God to go to the cross!

A God without wrath is not and cannot be a God of love! A God of wrath… you have a God who is willing to go through the physical, emotional and spiritual torture… all because He loves you!

Choice: God of love or impersonal force i.e. electricity.

If you want to know your value and know His love…. You have to come to grips with a God of wrath.

Fully knowing what He’s about to face… He says, “Take this cup from me! Nevertheless… not my will, but yours be done.”

Fully knowing exactly what it would cost him… no surprises here! God led Him to the edge of the fiery furnace and let him taste what he was about to go through… and he did it!

That’s the love you’ve been looking for all your life! No other love can satisfy like this love… no love from a spouse, friend, parent, child, or job can compare.

Feel abandoned? If He didn’t abandon you in the Garden… nothing can make him abandon you!
Feel let down…? People let you down? You tired of it? Feel like giving up? Never forget…. If he was willing to go the distance for you… won’t you hang in there with what you’re facing…?

We are in our current political divisiveness because of what’s being said!

Have you said something in haste? In anger?

James says... “Indeed, we all make many mistakes...For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way. We can make a large horse go wherever we want by means of a small bit in its mouth. And a small rudder makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot chooses to go, even though the winds are strong. In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches. But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire. And among all the parts of the body, the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body. It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself. People can tame all kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and fish, but no one can tame the tongue. It is restless and evil, full of deadly poison. Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in the image of God (PAUSE.... THOSE WHO DISAGREE WITH YOU, ARE MADE IN GODS IMAGE!). And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right! Does a spring of water bubble out with both fresh water and bitter water? I have a hard and fast rule when it comes our news media and our politicians.... Don’t take what they say seriously but take what they do seriously.

I don’t trust them!

- Politicians want to get re-elected....
- News media has a bottom line... profit!
- Social media has algorithms that put me in a bubble that feeds me information that I will most likely agree with... because they want to keep me clicking and scrolling!
- And... fear sells... bad news sells... and you will most likely stay tuned in if you agree.

Pause....
- is it true? Ask two questions when you hear something?
1. What is their bias?
2. What is their agenda?

- Am I getting the whole story?
- Will my response be productive?
- How will it be received?
- Am I angry in my response?
- What is my goal in responding?
- Have I listened?
- Am I putting the other person first?
- Have I prayed about my response?
- Is there wise counsel I can seek?

Everyone wants to be heard! But no one is listening!

James 1:9 - “Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry...

V. 26-27 - If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless. Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.”

Interesting that not listening and anger are connected...

Listening requires humility and self- reflection. Looking in the mirror.

It’s easy to point out others flaws.... but our faith requires that we work hard on our own. The gospel reminds us that we are deeply flawed.... we don’t have all the answers...we don’t see every angle.... we don’t have all the information...

Listening might mean getting your information from several sources.

1. How did you come to your political position? Have you always had those beliefs?
2. What sources do you trust? Why?

The incarnation means that for whatever reason God chose to let us be limited, and to be subject to sorrows and death… We now know he had the honesty and courage to take his own medicine. He can ask nothing from us that he has not exacted from himself. He has himself gone though the whole of human experience from the trivial irritations of family life and the cramping restrictions of hard work and lack of money to the worst horrors of pain and humiliation, defeat, despair and death. He was born in poverty and died in disgrace. He suffered infinite pain, all for us. And he thought it well worth his while.

A Demon's Guide to the Election
How C.S. Lewis Addressed National Division

In The Screwtape Letters, C.S. Lewis imagines how an experienced demonic operative might advise a younger, less experienced understudy in the intricacies of counter-Christian spiritual warfare. In one passage especially relevant right now, Lewis describes how politics could be used to tempt and thwart a Christ-follower. The setting is World War II Britain.

“Uncle Screwtape” says it this way: 'Let [your patient] begin by treating … Patriotism or Pacifism as part of his religion. Then let him, under the influence of partisan spirit, come to regard it as the most important part. Then quietly and gradually nurse him on to the stage at which the religion becomes merely part of the ‘cause,’ in which Christianity is valued chiefly because of the excellent arguments it can produce in favour of the British war-effort or of Pacifism."

Note the progression: first, politics is part of religion. Then, politics is the most important part of religion. Then, religion becomes part of politics. It’s genius.

To be clear, Lewis never advises that Christians ought to abandon political engagement or political causes. He does, however, warn just how easily the enemy can use political engagement to confuse what are ends and what are means. When it comes politics, especially the high-stakes kind that defines the current climate, American Christians have a history of losing the Story in the chaos of the moment.

America is worth protecting and preserving, and Christians should always side with what is good, even if flawed. We have much to steward, including the historic recognition of God-given rights, a system of government designed to protect those rights, a Constitution that prioritizes our allegiance to God over any allegiance to the state, and a history of men and women whom God used, within the framework of that freedom, to spark revival, to confront our national sins, to secure civil rights, to found Christian institutions, and to send missionaries around the world.

However, as we rightly acknowledge the ways in which America has been a blessing for the Church, we can never confuse one for the other. It is the Church whose future is secure. It is to the Head of the Church that our allegiance ultimately and exclusively belongs. The Kingdom of God is the end of all of human history. It, and only it, can ever claim our highest loyalties.

Redirecting our loyalties is more tempting than we often care to admit in a context in which more and more of daily life is politicized, a reality that simultaneously reveals deep flaws in our current social order and elevates the stakes of each subsequent election. Whenever and wherever political realities invade spaces that properly belong to family, to community, to friendship, and to religion, Americans should push back.

For the Christian, however, the stakes are even higher. We have embraced Christ, who offers more than personal salvation. He offers a Kingdom that will have no end. He is not less than our personal Savior, but He is certainly more. He is the King. His throne is not threatened or vulnerable.

Loyalties, Lewis understood, are not lost in grand ways. Politics claims them in more subtle ways. As Uncle Screwtape wrote:

“Once you have made the World an end, and faith as a means, you have almost won your man, and it makes very little difference what kind of worldly end he is pursuing. Provided that meetings, pamphlets, policies, movements, causes, and crusades matter more to him than prayers and sacraments and charity, he is ours.”

Chuck Colson famously said that salvation will never come on Air Force One. Neither will, for that matter, the anti-Christ. The rule and reign of Jesus Christ does not stand or fall on this or any election. Rather, we see this moment, even this political moment that holds so much consequence for our nation, in light of what is ultimately true: Christ is risen! Christ is Lord! Christ is making all things new!

By all means, we ought labor and canvas and advocate and persuade to the best of our ability. We ought want the true and good to win the day on Tuesday. But we will not serve this moment or any righteous cause well unless we keep certain things straight. We must not confuse the end with means. We must not confuse the King of Heaven and earth with the princes of this world. We must not confuse the potential of politics with the hope of resurrection.

Seek to edify all!
1. Seek to edify! 19 Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification.

- Don’t make being right more important than the relationship!
- What if sought to serve and encourage every person you ever met?

Your greatest aim as a Christian… Is to impact and influence others! Not to be right! If you sacrifice the relationship for being right, then you are wrong… Seeking to edify people builds bridges… harshness… withdrawing burns bridges.

And so… before you burn a bridge… or move to another neighborhood to get away from “those” people…. Build a bridge!

Your greatest aim as a Christian… Is to impact and influence others! Not to be right! If you sacrifice the relationship for being right, then you are wrong… Seeking to edify people builds bridges… harshness… withdrawing burns bridges.

And so… before you burn a bridge… or move to another neighborhood to get away from “those” people…. Build a bridge!

2. Be a learner! Learn to listen!

If you don’t think you have anything to learn… that is a problem! That’s arrogance at worst… ignorance at best… It’s not a political problem… it’s a you problem!

Doesn’t mean we don’t have an opinion… or that we strongly believe and defend out convictions…

2 questions to be a better listener! (Might help you with your marriage…). Pick one or two… when you are tempted to play verbal Ping-Pong… to jump in with your opinion… or to close up and walk away…

a. What led you to that view?

It puts you in the position of listener and learner! It can be painful at times! Like when I ask people about their beliefs on spiritual things… they think they are being so unique and so intellectual… (Idiot!)

Often we get into a discussion and we are getting only the last sentence of a long discussion… there is a whole story behind someone’s beliefs! And that story is important!

The truth is, most of hold the political positions we do because we were taught them! Did you grow up in a big city or small town? Did your family value certain things like education or hard work? Did your parents value you helping people? How did your parents manage money? Our story matters, and we must listen and learn other people’s story! It’s how we put people first!

Here’s why we don’t like this…. Because when you listen to someone’s story, it’s really hard to continue not liking them!

b. Have you always had this view? Voted this way? Believed this way?

As you engage in these conversations, we must remember that as Christians… God has given us clear guidelines!

Gossip applies to political discussions too! We are told that “no unwholesome word should proceed from you accept that which builds up and edifies others!”. God doesn’t dismiss these commandments when it comes to politics!

c. What sources do you get your information from?

If we don’t watch the news we are uninformed… If we watch the news we are misinformed… We are both marginally informed, and probably wrong at some level!

Keep this in mind!!! The media (and I am not anti-media… just go to another country that does not have that freedom!) But… it is a business! And they have a bottom line… profit! Some even brag about how many people watch their news…

In conclusion… as I said last week… never give away… never forfeit your ability to influence someone because you were so concerned about getting your political position across to someone! You have to wrestle with this… is putting a particular bumper sticker or lawn sign going to close the door of opportunity to have an influence on someone?

A Revolutionary Answer.

His answer is absolutely remarkable! We know politicians! How they avoid answering questions! It’s infuriating! Were these people mad? They were amazed!

He doesn’t over simplify things…. A lot of what Jesus teaches us is very simple, especially when it has to do with our relationship with Him. Obey Me. Follow Me. Love Me.

We cannot do what Jesus wouldn’t do!

Are you happy…? Those close to me might describe me as… pensive… introverted… moody… contemplative… But probably not happy! But I want to be happy! And so do you….

Some versions of Xianity have said things like, “God doesn’t want you to be happy… He wants you to be holy!”

C. S. Lewis – “The Scotch catechism says that man’s chief end is ‘to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.’ But we shall then know that these are the same thing. Fully to enjoy is to glorify. In commanding us to glorify Him, God is inviting us to enjoy Him.”

Think of the person living in the 7th century in poverty… the African American slave in the 1700’s… the person struggling with a chronic disease… the person who has lost a loved one… The person in prison… The peasant farmer…

Let me define Happiness… A deep, abiding satisfaction and security from being in God’s favor.

- Deep – Not a surface that this easily lost, it’s not a fleeting emotion that comes and goes with your mood… or whether you have had your caffeine yet!
- Abiding – It’s got stickiness… it is not dependent on favorable circumstances (health… finances… your “team”. Raider fans would never be happy! ☺.
- Satisfaction – A contented spirit.
- Security – I’m okay with God…. I’m okay with me!

There is happiness IN life AND… there is happiness WITH life. They are two different things.

The Science of Happiness – An explosion of research on this over the last 20 years!

- 10% circumstances… If/when thinking ** Caffeine happiness…

50% genetics – Sanguine (happy, hopeful, optimistic people) Melancholy (sad, miserable, downhearted, unhappy, gloomy, pessimistic). We really don’t hate you happy people… you make life more fun! We are jealous ☺.

- 40% choices. Life practices… follow certain disciplines… certain behaviors… HABITS!

Enjoying life…. With Jesus… With others… and For Others! Everything you need to life a happy life is right there!

- With Jesus… You get a sense of significance, worth, value.
- With Others… You get a sense of belonging.
- For Others… Your life has purpose… meaning.

Let’s get really practical… Because some of you are actually undermining your own happiness!
- You’re impulsive… short view… caffeine happiness… pleasure over fulfillment
- You’re getting bad information… fear has captivated your heart…
- You allow toxic people in your life…
- Decisions… how you spend your time… your money… the amount of sleep you get… diet… exercise.

COVID-19 has made things really difficult! More suicides in Portland than COVID deaths… More overdoses in SF than COVID deaths… the average age of COVID death is 78. Before COVID…? 78. 94% of COVID deaths had other health issues. I’ve been a little obsessive with cleanliness since H1N1 in 2009… I take C, D and Zinc… I exercise… I hold my breath when I walk by people in the store ☺.

This is just me… I decided I was going to take precautions… but I’m not going to live in fear. Statistically, I have a 99% chance of living, even if I get it! Hebrews, “It’s appointed for a person to die once… and then the judgment.” I’m going to continue to live a life WITH JESUS… WITH OTHERS… & FOR OTHERS.

Shame – comes on the heals of guilt.

** Example of Guilt and Shame at work – you blow it… tell a lie! You feel bad about doing something wrong… but deeper than that… you feel ashamed! You did something you despise in others… you thought you were better than that! You thought you were more courageous than that!

Opposite of guilt… innocence!

Opposite of shame… Glory! (Significance… value… worth)

Wrong being…

Who am I…? What names me…? Whose approval really matters…?

Have I tried to build my identity on the wrong things…?

- being a mom
- being the best employee

- having someone’s approval

- being successful

Shame is accompanied by
- strong feelings of inadequacy…

- Uncertainty as to where you fit in…
- a fear of failure…
- inability or unwillingness to take risks… or
- over shyness…

Key: When we violate God’s standard…
Out of love, He brings a deep sense of conviction… but never condemnation!

Romans 8:1 – There is no condemnation for those who are IN Christ Jesus!

1 John 3:20 – 20 If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything.

2) Phantom Guilt – Like a person who has had a limb amputated.

Phantom guilt can persist in a Xian’s life for sometime if not dealt with… where does it come from…?

- A hypersensitive/weak conscious…
- Unhealthy spiritual upbringing…
- Unhealthy upbringing…
o Don’t feel what you feel… feel what we tell you to feel!
o Don’t show emotion! ** Don’t ever get angry!
o Emotions not validated… You shouldn’t feel like that!
o Abuse… neglect… abandonment…

Phantom Guilt unchecked…. Can lead to:
- Perfectionism
- Workaholic
- Depression
- Regular outburst of anger
- An inability to have close relationships
- Can lead to physical illnesses!
- Can lead to addictions… from drugs to food to shopping!

Feeling guilty…? Ask: Is my guilt true guilt or phantom guilt…?

Have I violated God’s Word…? Or…

Have I not lived up to my mom’s expectations…?
Have I disappointed my dad…?
Have I not lived up to some expectation that’s not from God…?

Two kinds of guilt:
1) True Guilt – A good thing! Not a good thing when someone never experiences guilt!

Psalm 51:4 – 4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight; so you are right in your verdict and justified when you judge.

David has a straight edge… it’s God who sets the standard, and its God who determines sin and is 1st offended by our sin. To distinguish true and phantom guilt, we need to go to God’s Word… get good counsel… study, seek advice of scholars…etc…

We can’t resist all guilt! Some of it is right! Don’t you wish Hitler felt guilt…?

* WWII – US slow to believe reports about the slaughter of Jews… Not Germany! A Christian nation… maybe a less sophisticated people… After the war, US soldiers were horrified at what they found… in one city the US general forced the people of that town to clean up the mess… The Mayor and his wife committed suicide the next day! They knew that stuff was taking place, but they didn’t want to believe it could happen.

How do you deal with True Guilt…?
Admit it…
Confess it…
Claim it…

1 John 1:8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Psalm 32:5 - 5 I acknowledged my sin to You, And my iniquity I did not hide; I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the LORD "; And You forgave the guilt of my sin. Selah.

“Confess” means to say the same thing. To see your sin from the perspective of the one you have offended. You have to stand in their shoes!

“If I have offended you, I’m sorry”… that’s not confession!!! That’s doing what you have to do so you don’t look bad!

Psalm 32: 1 - Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit.

“Blessed” – complete wellness of being; profound joy… You must assert God’s truth over your feelings of guilt!

Matthew 4 – 18 One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers—Simon, also called Peter, and Andrew—throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living. 19 Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!” (Not a cheesy play on words… but a 1st century idiom… follow me and you will become like me! You will become a wise and influential person… An invitation of a lifetime for these “uneducated fishermen – an invitation to walk in and sit in the Dust of the Rabbi!) 20 And they left their nets at once and followed him.

** Not like some of you might follow the Giants… Jesus isn’t inviting us to be his fans… he’s inviting us to put on a uniform and play the game! “Follow”… 79x’s!

4:21 A little farther up the shore he saw two other brothers, James and John, sitting in a boat with their father, Zebedee, repairing their nets. And he called them to come, too. 22 They immediately followed him, leaving the boat and their father behind.

John 1 – 43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, “Follow me.” (and he and Nathanael began to follow Jesus) NIV

Matthew 9 – 9 As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at his tax collector’s booth. “Follow me and be my disciple,” Jesus said to him. So Matthew got up and followed him.

Not only is following Jesus an invitation to be with Jesus… but it’s an invitation to be with others!

Matthew 9:10 Later, Matthew invited Jesus and his disciples to his home as dinner guests, along with many tax collectors and other disreputable sinners. 11 But when the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with such scum? ” 12 When Jesus heard this, he said, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do.” 13 Then he added, “Now go and learn the meaning of this Scripture: (Hosea 6:6) ‘I want you to show mercy, not offer sacrifices.’ For I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.” NLT

Welcome to church! A place for scum… for sinners… for the sick… the broken…

** Denver church – “Scum of the earth”. 2nd favorite: “This ain’t your grandma’s church”

Now… think about this with me… good, simple, law-abiding fishermen… a man of impeccable integrity (Nathanael) a Tax collector… literally on the payroll of Rome… traitors to their country… on the level of prostitutes according the cultural ladder. Usually wealthy and educated, they would buy a post and collect taxes for the Roman government, allowed to collect extra for themselves with the enforcement of the Roman soldiers… Hated by Jews! And add to that, Judas Iscariot… and Simon the Zealot. Zealots were “God and Country” (country being more important than God – MIGA hats…) who were known to carry a dagger and when given the chance would attach and kill a Roman Soldier.

Imagine the conversations in that group…? What did Matthew do when Jesus said render unto to Caesar what is Caesar’s? Did he wink over at Simon…? You couldn’t get two more extreme people on the same squad! Its like Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump working together!

** Now Imagine… a white supremacist skinhead with a swastika tat…. a bi-sexual transgender… A black, Antifa radical… a couple of blue-caller construction workers with MAGA hats…. And throw in a few Google engineers… and an Apple tech guy just to round it off!

That’s what following Jesus looks like! It’s people who have Christ in common… and maybe nothing else!

And let’s not miss the significance of this scene… tax collectors… fishermen… women… both reputable and former prostitutes… dagger carrying zealots… together! Eating meals together!!

Food meant so much more than nourishment! It meant welcome… it meant friendship… it meant community

NT scholar Scott Bartchy says: “It would be difficult to overestimate the importance of table fellowship for the cultures of the Mediterranean basin in the first century of our era. Mealtimes were far more than occasions for individuals to consume nourishment. Being welcomed at a table for the purpose of eating food with another person had become a ceremony richly symbolic of friendship, intimacy and unity. Thus betrayal or unfaithfulness toward anyone with whom one had shared the table was viewed as particularly reprehensible. On the other hand, when persons were estranged, a meal invitation opened the way to reconciliation.”

Luke – 50 references to Jesus and food… Matthew – 94!

NT Scholar Robert Karris – “Jesus is either going to a meal… at a meal… or leaving a meal! He was ate meals so often, he was accused of being a glutton and a drunkard! Another scholar says, “Jesus was crucified because of whom he ate with”.

Your homework class… Eat together!

Toxic Emotions - Guilt and Shame Part 1

Emotional Intelligence – EQ vs. IQ… EQ is The capacity to be aware of, control, and express one's emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically. ‘emotional intelligence is the key to both personal and professional success’

According to the bible we are not only emotional beings, but we are also complex creatures made up of mind, conscience, spirit & emotions all wrapped up in a physical body! And it’s all connected! Our emotions are not isolated or separate from our conscious, mind or body!

Psalm 32:3 When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. 4 For day and night your hand was heavy on me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer.

When we come to faith in Christ… God has so much more for us than to just “be good”. He also desires to reform and transform our lives, which includes our emotions!

A person may come to Christ with very damaged emotions… Either overly emotional… someone who is controlled and subject to their emotions. Or, someone who is almost non-emotional. Both are unhealthy!

The next 4 weeks Pat and I are going to dig into the role of emotions and how to deal with some emotions that become toxic in lives. Guilt, Anger, Fear, Anxiety & Grief.

Today: Dealing with Guilt and Shame –
- Guilt is about wrong doing… you feel bad about something you did wrong.
- Shame is about wrong being… you feel there is something essentially wrong or “bad” about you

In today’s culture…. Guilt is all but disappearing. People don’t feel guilt, because what was once wrong is no longer wrong! Be your own person… you decide what is right and wrong… BUT, what’s not going away is this deep sense that something is wrong in me. Watch just about any movie, Netflix…. You’ll see this over and over… Do I matter…? Am I significant…? Am I important…?

For 80+ years our culture has been working hard to shed the Bible’s morality…. And while more and more people don’t feel guilty about anything specific… I didn’t do anything wrong… But the feelings of worth… of significance… of shame… persist!

** So… Question: When you get mad. What are you defending?

When you understand what it is you’re defending, you have the answer to what it is your heart holds most dear.

Which leads us to why it is that our anger… the things that make us angry bring about so much pain, heartache and destruction in our relationships…

Our basic problem is NOT anger, but that our anger is disordered. Disordered anger is a result of disordered love.

Here’s what I mean by that… Disordered love comes as a result of us making a good thing the ultimate thing.
When our love is disordered our anger will be disordered!

** Example – Your child gets caught stealing. You’re mad! But why? Because you see the destructive and painful path your child is headed down, and your love compels you to be angry, or because your reputation as a parent is at stake. What will the neighbors say?

Peel back like an onion…

- Level 1 – Everyday things that we face. Johnny spills his milk, my boss yells at me, my wife doesn’t respond the way I’d like… you get angry, you feel hurt.

- Level 2 – Things from our past. Someone deeply hurt us or took advantage of us, took something from us, we experienced betrayal, abuse or neglect. And we haven’t fully dealt with those hurts… and we bring that into our current lives… We can’t forget, we can’t let it go.

- Level 3 – Few people get this… but deep down underneath it all, you’re angry with God. You’ve had health issues… unanswered prayers… someone you loved was never healed… hopes/dreams never realized.

"Be angry"!

Anger is love in motion… it’s a response to defend someone or something that is threatened! When your child is threatened by someone trying to hurt them or violate them, a normal healthy response is to be angry!

Anger is commanded! Ephesians 4:26-27 – 26 “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath, 27 nor give place to the devil.”

“He that is angry without cause, sins. But he that is not angry, sins also…

Summary… No anger (repressed)… blow anger (expressed)… slow anger (calculated; intense; intentional). Slow anger is the mark of a mature and wise person!

** So… Question: When you get mad. What are you defending?

There are different ways of dealing with anger...

1. Some people think they have NO anger... but they are in denial.

2. Some people have BLOW anger and they erupt when triggered

3. But the emotionally intelligent way to deal with anger is to be SLOW to anger.

What's the opposite of anger...? It's not NO Anger... (to have a short fuse). But patience. (to have a long fuse).

Do you have a short fuse or a long fuse...?

- Proverbs 14:29 - Whoever is patient has great understanding, but one who is quick-tempered displays folly.

- Proverbs 15:18 - A hot-tempered person stirs up conflict, but the one who is patient calms a quarrel.

- Proverbs 22:25 – Do make friends with a hot-tempered person or associate with one easily angered.

III. Pray your tears!

The psalms are raw... real... But what’s important to see here that David runs to his connection to God!

Friends are vital! Living in community is critical!! But… we must go to God to! Take your tears to your heavenly Father!

a. Pray in light of God’s love.

The beauty of the Psalms… God’s love remains… Even when you are not theologically correct…
Psalm 39:12 "Lord, hear my prayer. Listen to my cry for help. Pay attention to my sobbing. I'm like a guest in your home. I'm only a visitor, like all of my family who lived before me. 13 Leave me alone. Let me be full of joy again before I die."

He knows how we speak when we are desperate! And he is not afraid of it or bothered by it.

b. Pray in light of the cross.

Matthew 26:38 – 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”

There is no other book or God like this! Buddhism teaches you to deny emotion…

Two things….

1) God knows our pain! If you can ever experienced pain like the loss of a child… You are not afraid to talk to someone who has been where you’re at. We have a God who is been where we’re at.

When you feel abandoned see Jesus on the cross being abandoned by the father. See him crying that my God my God why have you for sake me. Remind yourself that he was forsaken so that you would not be. That even when you pray for God to leave you promises that he won’t.

2) Even Jesus needed friends!

** NPR – Study with rats ... 1st Study… one rat, two options to drink from. Water in one, the other laced with heroine. The rat quickly was addicted and died of overdose. 2nd study… same option! One waterspout was pure water, the other laced with heroin. But… the rat was put into a community of other rats! Not one rat died or even got addicted! The opposite of addiction is not sobriety... but connection. We are born with a need to bond… and we will bond with something… be it drugs… porn… even abusive relationships!

There are tears that come from self-pity… They make us small. Over sensitive... unwillingness to forgive... always blaming others for their unhappiness... impatience... false guilt... self-absorbed.

But as we look at the cross… our tears are put in perspective! Our tears can strengthen us, and grow us!

c. Pray in light of your ultimate future!

Play the long story not the short story. Don’t stop at the cross go to resurrection.

Ps. 16:8 I know that the LORD is always with me. He is at my right hand. I will always be secure. 9 So my heart is glad. Joy is on my tongue. My body also will be secure. 10 You will not leave me in the grave. You will not let your faithful one rot away. 11 You always show me the path that leads to life. You will fill me with joy when I am with you. You will give me endless pleasures at your right hand.

Your problems and circumstances are not the reason you’re sad and depressed. It is the way you were dealing with them!

This life is a war zone... Live long enough you will experience deep loss and grief. We must keep putting our hope in our ultimate future!

Psalm 126 – 5 Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy. 6 Those who go out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with them.

** Don’t waste your sorrows… See your tears as an opportunity for growth. You can’t stuff them… you get no fruit! You can’t just walk outside and dump a pile of seeds! No fruit!

Look beneath the surface!

What’s going on…? What’s underneath…? What’s under the hood…? What causes our tears?

Psalm 42:5 – 5 My spirit, why are you so sad? Why are you so upset deep down inside me?

** Musicians get it! Eels… Songs like, “Novocain for the soul” and “Elizabeth on the Bathroom Floor” & “Be Hurt”… probably most known for his songs on the Shrek movie…

Mark Oliver Everett went on what he calls a project of self-improvement, during which he got married, got divorced and, at the age of 54, had a son. He also spent time reckoning with the losses he'd experienced earlier in life, including his sister's suicide, his mother's death from cancer and his father's fatal heart attack.
Now he's back, with a new album, The Deconstruction: a reflection on both the pain and joy of life. He says the point of the record is that "life is constant motion."

"We spend most of our lives after we're born slowly building up these defenses and walls around ourselves," Everett explains. "I just thought, 'What's underneath all that? What would happen if you tore down those defenses?”

When we sow our tears… the promise of the Bible… tears don’t just go away or give way but actually produce joy! There is a joy comes from tears it is so rich and deep. So avoiding our tears doesn’t change us. But planting or invest more tears.

Xians have a little mythical belief... If I am a good boy/girl then God will protect me from pain in this life!

Book of Job!! Job 16 – 20 My friends scorn me; My eyes pour out tears to God.

Not all pain is because you have done something wrong!! Jesus a man of sorrows! And he walked in lived perfectly with the father!

Interesting metaphor for salvation… Ezekiel 36:26 – 26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.

Which means that we may actually experience more sorrow living in Jesus. Your heart becomes more of a heart!

1 Thess. 4 – 13 Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope.

** If we don’t learn to expect pain in this life we will not only have tears when we do experience pain, we will have tears over having tears!

But if you do not worship it, you will be thrown immediately into a blazing furnace. Then what god will be able to rescue you from my hand?”

16 Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to him, “King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. 17 If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us[c] from Your Majesty’s hand. 18 But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.”

He ordered the furnace heated seven times hotter than usual 20 and commanded some of the strongest soldiers in his army to tie up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and throw them into the blazing furnace. 21 So these men, wearing their robes, trousers, turbans and other clothes, were bound and thrown into the blazing furnace. 22 The king’s command was so urgent and the furnace so hot that the flames of the fire killed the soldiers who took up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, 23 and these three men, firmly tied, fell into the blazing furnace.

24 Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisers, “Weren’t there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?”

They replied, “Certainly, Your Majesty.”

25 He said, “Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.”

26 Nebuchadnezzar then approached the opening of the blazing furnace and shouted, “Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come out! Come here!”

So Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego came out of the fire, 27 and the satraps, prefects, governors and royal advisers crowded around them. They saw that the fire had not harmed their bodies, nor was a hair of their heads singed; their robes were not scorched, and there was no smell of fire on them.

28 Then Nebuchadnezzar said, “Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who has sent his angel and rescued his servants! They trusted in him and defied the king’s command and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God. 29 Therefore I decree that the people of any nation or language who say anything against the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego be cut into pieces and their houses be turned into piles of rubble, for no other god can save in this way.”

Knowing our identity as IN CHRIST is essential to loving a life of joy and of power! Paul tells us that we have "redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins according to the riches of God's grace". Redemption is such a beautiful word! It means to buy back... to release from captivity... to rescue... It's so meaningful when you consider it in light of Genesis 3:10 where Adam responds to God... "I was afraid, because I was naked, so I hid". In one act of rebellion against God, FEAR, GUILT and SHAME became part of the human condition. But Redemption which both a present reality and a future hope reminds us that all that was lost and all that is broken will be restored one day!

Ephesians 5:1 says, "Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children.” Notice that we don't imitate God to be loved by God... it starts with the reality that we are already loved! We then strive to look like Jesus, FROM His love not FOR His love. There's a world of difference!

Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me
The “rod” was also used to protect the sheep from other animals. The rod was a club about 2 feet long with a knob on the end of it about the size of one’s fist. It was used to ward off enemies such as a bear or a lion because with one quick blow you could put to death such an animal.

The “rod” is also described in the book of Proverbs for discipline (Proverbs 13:24).

This “rod” was the shepherd’s symbol of authority, power, discipline and protection from danger.

Rod, used for discipline...This is actually a sign of love because love = discipline since the opposite of love is not hate…it is indifference. Hebrews 12:6 says “the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.” The psalmist declares “Blessed is the one you discipline, LORD, the one you teach from your law” (Psalm 94:12) and “that in faithfulness you have afflicted me” (Psalm 119:75b) for surely “the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in”

Jesus often withdrew to a quiet place! Why…?

We have lost the art of silence and solitude…

Both God in the OT and Jesus in the NT assure us that one thing we can always count on… God will be and IS with us! And He’s with us because He’s FOR us!

Deuteronomy 4:7 NLT - “For what great nation has a god as near to them as the Lord our God is near to us whenever we call on him?”

Jesus’ most common invitation was “Follow Me”. Come… Learn from me… be with Me… The Christian faith is 1st and foremost, is an invitation to be with Jesus!

The first-century Jews had a blessing that beautifully expresses the commitment of a disciple to stay in the presence of the one he followed: “May you always be covered by the dust of your rabbi.” That is, “May you follow him so closely that the dust his feet kicks up is what cakes your clothing and lines your face.”

** The ancient Talmud actually has a story about a disciple who snuck under his rabbi’s bed so that he would be present when the rabbi and his wife went to bed with each other. He was discovered, and the rabbi wanted to know what his prize pupil was doing... His response was a classic: “This too is Torah, and I need to learn!”

John Ortberg – What mattered was not so much the particular activity they were doing. What mattered was being with their rabbi whatever was going on. Every activity was an opportunity to learn from the rabbi how to be like the rabbi. I can be “sitting at Jesus feet” when I’m kneeling in prayer or negotiating a contract or fixing my kids lunch or watching a movie. All it requires is my asking him to be my teacher and companion in this moment.

You may be facing death, but you aren’t facing death alone; the Lord is with you. You may be facing unemployment, but you aren’t facing unemployment alone; the Lord is with you. You may be facing marital struggles, but you aren’t facing them alone; the Lord is with you. You may be facing debt,but you aren’t facing debt alone; the Lord is with you.

Say it out loud... I am not alone!

Can may want to use it in your life, but depression is a real battle for many and we MUST learn to partner with God in fighting against it spiritually, psychologically, through good counsel, physically through sleep, diet and exercise and even physiologically through medication if needed.

I’m told there really is a valley of shadows...

David probably led his sheep through the valley of the shadow of death as he was growing up. As you look in the Bible, the term “valley” also refers to all kinds of rough times in life.

* Joshua talks about the Valley of Calamity
* Psalm 84 talks about the Valley of Weeping
* Hosea talks about the Valley of Trouble
* The reference to a valley in Ps 23 in Hebrew actually means The Valley of Deep Darkness

We all experience this.... it feels like God has abandoned you. You doubt Gods love and faithfulness.... you might even begin to wonder if you did something wrong! You try praying and you get nothing... all the stuff you normally do that gets you out of the funk you’re in doesn’t work.

Embrace the Darkness…. Listen to a 15th century monk named John...... God perceives the imperfections in us, and because of His love for us, urges us to grow up. His love is not content to leave us in our weakness, and for this reason he takes us into a "dark night". He weans us from all the pleasures by giving us dry times and inward darkness.
... In doing so He is able to take away all the vices we struggle with and create virtues within us. Through the "dark night" pride becomes humility, greed becomes simplicity, anger becomes contentment, greed becomes peace, gluttony becomes moderation, envy becomes joy, and laziness becomes strength.
...No soul will ever grow deep in the spiritual life unless God works passively in that soul by means of the "dark night".

What happened between the "green pastures" and the "still waters"? Life is lived often between these two places... For David, this would probably have been the desert. Desert is a common biblical theme where we are challenged to relate to God through faith... not our feelings.

God sometimes leads us to the desert... to make us thirsty.

How's your soul? We live in a loud... fast... and distracted world! Sometimes we use distractions to avoid dealing with the deep soul work that needs to be done in our lives?
